HK Associates, led by architects Kathy Hancox and Michael Kothke, have transformed a midcentury home in Tucson, originally designed by modernist Tom Gist, into a contemporary masterpiece. The house, now known as Casa Luce, was initially characterized
by a dim central kitchen and a sunken garden, which restricted movement and obscured views of the Santa Rita Mountains. The architects approached the renovation with a focus on 'active preservation,' removing dated elements and reconfiguring the layout to enhance clarity and serenity. Key changes included eliminating central columns, adding skylights, and revealing a previously obscured window wall to connect the interior with the surrounding desert landscape. The renovation also introduced an earthy palette of adobe, lime plaster, and natural wood, linking the home to its environment.
