Lisa Walters, an occupational therapist, personal trainer, and fall prevention specialist, is leading the 'Move with Purpose' class for Southern Arizona Senior Pride. This accessible movement class meets three times a week and is designed for participants
of all levels, offering a 75-minute group session. Each class incorporates warm-up, aerobic, balance, strength, flexibility, and relaxation activities within a supportive and joy-focused environment. The program is made possible by support from AARP and a partnership between Senior Pride and TIHAN, and is offered free of charge, with donations supporting Southern Arizona Senior Pride's programs for LGBTQI+ older people.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is important for promoting health and well-being among the senior population in Southern Arizona, particularly within the LGBTQI+ community. The 'Move with Purpose' class, led by an experienced professional like Lisa Walters, addresses critical health aspects such as fall prevention, strength, and flexibility, which are vital for maintaining independence and quality of life in older adults. The program's accessibility and focus on a supportive environment help reduce barriers to participation, fostering a sense of community and combating social isolation. Furthermore, the partnership with AARP and the support for Southern Arizona Senior Pride highlight a commitment to inclusive health services, recognizing the specific needs of LGBTQI+ seniors and contributing to their overall physical and mental health.
What's Next?
The 'Move with Purpose' class will continue to meet three times a week, offering ongoing opportunities for seniors to engage in physical activity. Participants can expect to continue benefiting from Lisa Walters' expertise in occupational therapy and personal training. Southern Arizona Senior Pride will likely continue to seek donations to support this and other programs aimed at LGBTQI+ older people. The success and positive impact of this class may lead to its expansion or the development of similar health and wellness initiatives for seniors in the region. The collaboration between Senior Pride, TIHAN, and AARP could serve as a model for other communities looking to provide inclusive and accessible fitness programs for their senior populations.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Move with Purpose' program, while seemingly a straightforward fitness class, carries deeper implications for social equity and public health. By specifically catering to LGBTQI+ older people, it addresses historical disparities and potential marginalization faced by this community in healthcare and social services. The emphasis on a 'joy-focused environment' goes beyond physical exercise, aiming to foster mental well-being and a sense of belonging, which are crucial for healthy aging. This initiative exemplifies how community-based programs can play a vital role in creating inclusive spaces that support the holistic health needs of diverse senior populations, challenging traditional notions of aging and promoting active, engaged lifestyles.
