Brock Davenport, an angler from Beaufort, North Carolina, has established a new state record for the Jolthead Porgy. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries officially certified Davenport's catch, which weighed 16 pounds. He caught the fish on August
9 while fishing near Wrightsville Beach with Jeffery Thomas. Davenport used cigar minnows as bait, and it took approximately 10 minutes to reel in the fish. The record-breaking porgy measured 29-and-a-half inches in length and had a girth of 24 inches. This new record surpasses the previous state record for a Jolthead Porgy, which was a 14-pound, 14-ounce fish caught by Randy Brock in 2015. Jolthead Porgy are typically found in areas with hard-bottom and coral habitats and are recognizable by their rounded foreheads, blue markings below their eyes, and orange corners inside their mouths.
