What's Happening?
Brighton & Hove City Council is actively working to build on the legacy of the Women's Rugby World Cup by promoting rugby among women and girls in the area. Following the successful hosting of two sold-out World Cup games, including a match between England
and Australia, the council has initiated rugby-themed activities. These efforts have engaged over 2,600 women and girls aged 16 and above, with more than 300 now playing rugby regularly. The initiative is supported by over 20 clubs, community groups, and local organizations. Activities include tag rugby sessions for schools and planned walking rugby events, aiming to increase female participation in the sport.
Why It's Important?
The initiative by Brighton & Hove City Council highlights the potential of major sporting events to drive local community engagement and promote sports participation among underrepresented groups. By focusing on women and girls, the council is addressing gender disparities in sports and encouraging a more inclusive sporting environment. This effort not only fosters community spirit but also contributes to public health by promoting physical activity. The economic benefits of hosting such events are also significant, as they attract global attention and tourism, boosting local businesses and the city's profile.
What's Next?
Brighton & Hove City Council plans to continue its efforts to promote rugby among women and girls. Future activities include a series of walking rugby events, which are designed to be more accessible and inclusive. The council aims to sustain and grow the interest generated by the World Cup, potentially leading to the development of new local talent and increased participation in rugby. The ongoing support from local clubs and organizations will be crucial in maintaining momentum and ensuring the long-term success of these initiatives.
