What's Happening?
Blumhouse Productions, a prominent film and TV horror production company, is collaborating with Universal Orlando to update the popular Horror Makeup Show at Universal Studios Florida. The attraction, which temporarily closed in May after more than 35
years of operation, is one of only two original attractions remaining from the park's opening. The updated show is expected to open later this year. Universal Orlando Resort announced that the revamped attraction will offer guests insights into how Hollywood's top special effects artists have created terrifying movie experiences for over a century. Blumhouse has previously contributed to Universal's theme parks, notably through its involvement in the popular Halloween Horror Nights Houses.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration signifies a strategic move by Universal Studios Florida to refresh a long-standing attraction with a contemporary horror brand, aiming to enhance the guest experience and maintain relevance in the competitive theme park industry. By partnering with Blumhouse, known for its successful horror films, Universal can leverage the production company's expertise and current popularity to draw in new audiences and appeal to existing horror fans. For Blumhouse, this partnership further extends its brand presence beyond film and television into experiential entertainment, potentially increasing its visibility and reinforcing its position as a leader in the horror genre. The update also highlights the ongoing trend of theme parks integrating popular intellectual properties to create immersive and engaging attractions, ensuring that classic park elements evolve with current entertainment trends.
What's Next?
The updated Horror Makeup Show is slated to open later this year at Universal Studios Florida. Following its reopening, the attraction will likely be closely monitored for guest reception and its ability to integrate Blumhouse's modern horror aesthetic with the show's historical focus on special effects. This collaboration could pave the way for future partnerships between Blumhouse and Universal's theme parks, potentially leading to more Blumhouse-themed attractions or experiences. The success of this updated show may also influence other theme parks to seek similar collaborations with popular entertainment brands to revitalize their offerings and attract diverse audiences.
Beyond the Headlines
The decision to update a classic attraction like the Horror Makeup Show with a contemporary partner like Blumhouse reflects a broader shift in the entertainment industry towards synergistic branding and cross-platform experiences. It underscores the value of intellectual property in driving consumer engagement across different mediums, from film to theme park attractions. This move also touches upon the cultural significance of horror as a genre, demonstrating its enduring appeal and its capacity to evolve with new storytelling techniques and production companies. The blend of traditional Hollywood makeup artistry with modern horror sensibilities could offer a unique educational and entertaining experience, bridging the gap between classic and contemporary horror for theme park visitors.
