What's Happening?
OceanaGold Philippines Inc. (OGP) has entered a partnership with Holcim Group's waste management business to reduce landfill disposal from its Didipio gold-copper mine. The two-year agreement with Geocycle Philippines will divert up to 70% of the mine's
residual waste to a cement kiln coprocessing facility. This initiative aims to extend the operational life of the mine's landfill and reduce reliance on landfill disposal. The partnership supports OceanaGold's Zero Waste to Landfill goal and involves using waste materials as alternative fuel and raw materials in cement manufacturing.
Why It's Important?
This partnership represents a significant step towards sustainable waste management in the mining industry. By diverting waste from landfills and utilizing it in cement production, OceanaGold is reducing its environmental footprint and supporting circular economy practices. The initiative also highlights the potential for collaboration between mining and waste management sectors to address environmental challenges. The cost savings and extended landfill life further demonstrate the economic benefits of sustainable practices, which could encourage other companies to adopt similar strategies.
