What's Happening?
Podium, previously known as The Roost Podcast Network, has announced the signing of four new creator-led podcasts: “Bite Back” with Abbey Sharp, “Commander at Home” with Brian Kibler and Olivia Gobert-Hicks, “Love, Lex P,” and “Stan Wars” with Olivia Lopes
and Ian Slater. This development follows the network's relaunch by its parent company, Night, a talent management firm, which also included signing Trisha Paytas’ “Just Trish” as a major partnership. Podium's existing roster features popular shows such as “This Past Weekend” with Theo Von, “Sam & Colby Reacts,” “The Yard,” and “Weekly Teacap” with Kristi Cook. Collectively, the network's shows generate over 50 million monthly video and audio impressions and boast more than 66 million followers across various platforms, according to the company. Podium emphasizes its strategy of providing creators with the necessary infrastructure and resources to expand their shows into media businesses, while allowing them to retain ownership.
Why It's Important?
This expansion by Podium signifies a growing trend in the podcasting industry where talent management firms are investing heavily in creator-led content. By offering infrastructure, audience development, and paid-media budgets, Podium aims to empower individual creators to transform their podcasts into sustainable media enterprises. This model contrasts with traditional media structures by prioritizing creator ownership and providing comprehensive support, which could attract more independent voices to professional networks. The focus on cross-platform brand deals, spanning podcasts, video, and social content, also highlights an evolving monetization strategy in digital media. This approach allows brands to reach diverse audiences through integrated campaigns, potentially increasing revenue streams for both creators and the network. The inclusion of shows covering internet culture, nutrition, and gaming demonstrates an effort to tap into various niche fandoms, reflecting the diverse interests of modern digital consumers and the increasing specialization within the podcast market.
What's Next?
Podium plans to continue developing and producing shows in-house, managing audience development, and providing marketing support, including paid-media budgets for promoting clips. For shows like “Commander at Home,” which primarily operated on YouTube, Podium will facilitate expansion into platforms like Spotify Video and broaden distribution across other audio platforms, alongside assisting with guest booking. The network's VP of Revenue & Partnerships, Catherine Browne, indicated that these new signings reflect Podium's commitment to building a diverse portfolio that caters to different corners of fandom. This suggests a continued focus on identifying and nurturing creator talent across various content categories. The emphasis on cross-platform brand deals indicates that Podium will likely further refine its commercial model to maximize revenue through integrated advertising strategies that leverage the combined reach of its creators' podcasts, videos, and social media presence.
Beyond the Headlines
The strategy employed by Podium reflects a broader shift in the entertainment industry, where individual creators are gaining significant leverage and influence. By offering robust support while allowing creators to maintain ownership, Podium is addressing a key concern for many independent artists who seek to professionalize their work without sacrificing creative control. This model could set a precedent for how talent is managed and developed in the digital age, potentially leading to more equitable partnerships between creators and networks. The success of this approach could also influence how traditional media companies engage with digital-first talent, pushing them towards more creator-friendly terms. Furthermore, the focus on diverse content, from internet culture to specialized topics like nutrition and gaming, underscores the fragmentation of audience interests and the power of niche communities in driving engagement and monetization in the modern media landscape.
