Brazil is positioned as a significant source of Rare Earth Elements (REEs), holding approximately 23% of the global supply, second only to China. The country is actively producing REEs like cerium and neodymium, with substantial untapped resources. Despite
this abundance, Brazil faces challenges in developing its mid-market capacity for mineral refinement, often outsourcing this process to countries like China. The global demand for REEs is increasing due to their critical role in advanced computing hardware, mobile phones, permanent magnets, electric vehicle drivetrains, and wind energy systems. The current supply struggle is not due to geological scarcity but rather the complexities of economically viable extraction and processing. China currently controls up to 94% of the REE market, particularly for heavy REEs which are genuinely scarce and concentrated in regions like southern China and Myanmar.
