What's Happening?
Dr. Alyssa Olenick, a physiologist, emphasizes the importance of strength training for women in midlife, particularly due to the drop in estrogen during menopause which impacts muscle and bone health. Estrogen plays a crucial role in building and maintaining
muscle and bone, and its loss can lead to declines in muscle strength, power, and mass. To address these issues, Olenick has developed a series of workouts as part of the ALO Wellness Club's female-focused programs. These workouts aim to improve strength and stability, helping women remain strong and resilient. The exercises include stability work, which is vital for maintaining balance and reducing injury risk as one ages.
Why It's Important?
Strength training is essential for women over 50 as it helps counteract the effects of estrogen loss, which can lead to weakened muscles and bones. By engaging in regular strength training, women can maintain their physical capabilities and improve their quality of life. This approach not only supports muscle and bone health but also enhances balance and functional movement, reducing the risk of falls and injuries. As the population ages, promoting strength training can lead to healthier aging and reduce healthcare costs associated with age-related physical decline.
