What's Happening?
Artcraft Pictures, a U.S. restoration company, has finalized a distribution deal with French classic film distributor Carlotta Films. This collaboration will bring a collection of restored Hollywood classics from the silent and early sound eras to French theaters
and home entertainment. The agreement was launched at Lyon's Lumière Film Festival with a newly restored version of Clarence G. Badger's 1927 film 'It,' starring Clara Bow. Other titles covered by the agreement include Herbert Brenon's 'Beau Geste' (1926), Cecil B. DeMille's 'The Affairs of Anatol' (1921), William C. deMille's 'Miss Lulu Bett,' and Lionel Barrymore's 'His Glorious Night' (1929). Artcraft Pictures was founded by film preservation specialists James Mockoski and Robert A. Harris, known for their work on landmark restorations. The company takes its name from the original Artcraft Pictures, a distribution banner established in 1916 that became part of Paramount Pictures.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant for the preservation and global accessibility of American cinematic heritage. By distributing these restored classics in France, Carlotta Films and Artcraft Pictures are ensuring that a new generation of audiences can experience foundational works of Hollywood. This initiative helps to prevent these films from fading away, maintaining their cultural and historical relevance. For U.S. film preservationists, this deal provides a crucial international platform, highlighting the importance of their work in restoring and making available films that might otherwise be lost or inaccessible. The collaboration also underscores the enduring international appeal of classic American cinema and the value placed on its restoration.
What's Next?
Carlotta Films plans to release the newly acquired films in France both theatrically and on Blu-ray, with individual release dates to be announced. The launch of the collaboration with the French premiere of the restored 'It' at the Lumière Film Festival marks the beginning of this distribution effort. Artcraft Pictures will continue its work with the San Francisco Silent Film Festival on restorations from Paramount's silent-era library, with 'Beau Geste' having already been presented at the Telluride Film Festival. This ongoing restoration work suggests a continuous pipeline of classic American films that could potentially be distributed internationally through this partnership or similar future agreements.
Beyond the Headlines
This collaboration extends beyond mere distribution; it represents a deeper commitment to the cultural exchange and historical continuity of cinema. In an era dominated by contemporary blockbusters and streaming content, the effort to restore and re-release silent and early sound films highlights the artistic and historical value of these foundational works. It also brings attention to the meticulous and often challenging work of film preservationists like James Mockoski and Robert A. Harris, whose dedication ensures that the technical and artistic integrity of these films is maintained for future generations. The partnership fosters a global appreciation for the origins of filmmaking and the enduring impact of early Hollywood on cinematic storytelling.
