What's Happening?
AAT Kings, a tour operator, has announced that 95% of its tours now incorporate 'Make Travel Matter' experiences. This initiative is designed to connect travelers with local communities, cultures, and conservation efforts across Australia and New Zealand.
The experiences aim to provide a richer understanding of destinations by allowing guests to interact with individuals protecting native species, learn from local communities, and hear traditional stories. For instance, the Outback New South Wales Adventurer tour includes joining an Indigenous guide at Menindee Lakes and Kinchega National Park to learn about Barkindji cultural heritage. In New Zealand, the Southern Wonders tour features a visit to the Oamaru Penguin Conservation Centre, where guests learn about the conservation work for kororā, New Zealand’s little blue penguins. Another experience in the new season is Real Country, a working New Zealand farm, offering insights into rural life and agricultural heritage through activities like sheepdog mustering and horse demonstrations. These additions are part of AAT Kings' 2027-2028 season, which also includes guaranteed 2026 departures and potential savings for travelers.
Why It's Important?
This shift by AAT Kings towards 'Make Travel Matter' experiences signifies a growing trend in the tourism industry to prioritize sustainable and culturally responsible travel. By integrating these experiences, the company aims to create a more profound and meaningful journey for travelers, moving beyond superficial sightseeing to foster deeper connections with the places they visit. This approach can lead to increased awareness and support for local conservation efforts and Indigenous cultures, potentially contributing to their preservation and economic well-being. For the tourism sector, this model could set a new standard, encouraging other operators to adopt similar practices that benefit both travelers and host communities. It also addresses a rising demand from consumers for travel options that offer authentic cultural immersion and contribute positively to the destinations, thereby enhancing the overall value proposition of guided tours.
What's Next?
AAT Kings is currently promoting its 2027-2028 New Season Sale, offering savings of up to AU$2,200 per couple on selected departures for bookings made by September 30, 2026. This sales period will likely gauge initial traveler interest and booking trends for these newly integrated experiences. The success and feedback from these tours could influence future tour development and the expansion of 'Make Travel Matter' initiatives. Other tour operators may observe AAT Kings' strategy and potentially follow suit, leading to a broader industry shift towards more responsible and immersive travel offerings. The continued emphasis on community engagement and conservation could also lead to new partnerships between tourism companies and local organizations, further strengthening the positive impact of travel on destinations.
Beyond the Headlines
The integration of 'Make Travel Matter' experiences reflects a broader societal shift towards conscious consumerism, where travelers are increasingly seeking experiences that align with their values of sustainability and social responsibility. This trend has ethical implications, as it encourages tourism that respects and supports local cultures and environments rather than exploiting them. Legally, such initiatives might influence future regulations or guidelines for responsible tourism, potentially leading to certifications or standards for operators. Culturally, these experiences can foster greater cross-cultural understanding and appreciation, breaking down stereotypes and promoting global citizenship. In the long term, this approach could contribute to the resilience of local communities and ecosystems, ensuring that the benefits of tourism are shared more equitably and sustainably.
