The U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is advancing battery safety through comprehensive research and collaboration with industry experts. The laboratory is focusing on understanding battery failures by examining risks
at every stage of a battery's life. This includes characterizing the microstructural, thermal, electrical, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of batteries. NLR has developed an open-access Battery Safety Database in collaboration with the University of Texas at Austin and Exponent Inc., supported by the Advanced Research Project Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The database aims to provide key safety characteristics across different battery types. Researchers at NLR are also using advanced imaging techniques and artificial intelligence models to predict battery behaviors and improve safety designs.
