Japanese agtech company Culta is planning to expand its AI-assisted breeding and branded fruit model into the U.S., Australia, and Europe. Founded in 2017 by Shuhei Noaki, Culta utilizes AI and machine learning to analyze genomic and phenotypic data,
accelerating the development of new fruit varieties without gene editing or genetic modification. This technology has reduced strawberry variety development from approximately 10 years to just two years. The company currently works with 36 contract growers, buying back 100% of their crop for sale in Japan and Southeast Asia. Culta's proprietary varieties, such as the Sakura Drops strawberry, are bred for enhanced traits like tolerance to higher temperatures, increased yields, higher Brix levels, and improved firmness, allowing for longer post-harvest quality. Culta aims to achieve revenues of US$195 million by 2032 and recently secured US$4.5 million in pre-Series A funding.
