What's Happening?
The fourth International Tourism Fair of Tolima (FITTCA 2026) is set to take place in Honda, Tolima, from December 4-6, 2026. This marks the first time the fair will be held outside Ibagué, moving to a city renowned for its historic port, bridges, and
active market. The event aims to combine tourism business meetings with immersive experiences rooted in local history, food, and nature. Honda's selection as host follows its significant rise in Colombia's 2025 Regional Tourism Competitiveness Index, moving from 15th to second place among 295 municipalities. The three-day program will feature a commercial exhibition, business meetings, an academic program, guided visits, immersive tourism experiences, cultural activities, and regional food, targeting tourism service providers, entrepreneurs, and international guests.
Why It's Important?
The relocation of FITTCA 2026 to Honda is a strategic move to directly showcase the destination's appeal to potential partners and investors in the tourism industry. By hosting the fair in a city that has demonstrated significant improvement in tourism competitiveness, Tolima's tourism authority aims to foster commercial partnerships and promote destinations across the department. This initiative is expected to boost local businesses, including guides, accommodation providers, restaurants, and cultural enterprises, by allowing them to demonstrate their offerings firsthand. The focus on Honda's river heritage, colonial architecture, and local gastronomy, such as Magdalena River fish, Tolima tamales, and lechona, provides a unique selling proposition that could attract a broader range of tourists and investments, contributing to regional economic growth.
What's Next?
The upcoming fair in December 2026 will serve as a crucial platform for Honda and the wider Tolima department to solidify their position as key tourism destinations. The event is expected to facilitate numerous commercial conversations and partnerships, potentially leading to increased visitor numbers and tourism-related investments in the region. Following the fair, there will likely be an assessment of its impact on Honda's tourism sector and its overall competitiveness. The continued emphasis on showcasing local culture, history, and culinary traditions through such events could lead to sustained growth in regional tourism and further development of infrastructure and services to support the influx of visitors.
Beyond the Headlines
The shift of the tourism fair to Honda underscores a broader trend in regional development, where cultural heritage and local identity are leveraged as economic assets. Honda's historical significance as a commercial hub on the Magdalena River, coupled with its architectural heritage and vibrant market, offers a compelling narrative for sustainable tourism. This approach not only aims to attract tourists but also to preserve and celebrate local traditions, potentially fostering a stronger sense of community pride and economic resilience. The success of this fair could serve as a model for other regions looking to transform their historical and cultural assets into engines for economic development, emphasizing authentic experiences over generic tourism offerings.
