What's Happening?
Deep Fission, Inc., an advanced nuclear energy company, has announced the arrival of its prototype reactor canister at its site in Parsons, Kansas. This marks a significant milestone in the company's Proof-of-Concept Well program and the development of its Gravity
Nuclear Reactor™. The prototype will undergo testing to validate installation and operational processes under non-nuclear conditions. The Gravity Nuclear Reactor™ design involves placing a small modular pressurized water reactor in a borehole one mile underground, using a closed-loop system to convert thermal energy into electricity.
Why It's Important?
The arrival of the prototype reactor canister is a crucial step in advancing Deep Fission's innovative approach to nuclear energy. By developing a subsurface deployment model, the company aims to enhance safety and scalability in nuclear power generation. This development is significant for the U.S. energy sector, as it aligns with efforts to provide reliable, low-carbon baseload power. The project also supports the U.S. Department of Energy's Reactor Pilot Program, which seeks to accelerate the commercialization of nuclear energy technologies.
