Sinclair Broadcast Group's engineering unit, ONE Media Technologies, is actively working to ensure the continued viability of over-the-air broadcasting across all devices. Mark Aitken, president of ONE Media Technologies, emphasized the critical need
for broadcasters to remain a relevant communications platform, whether through ATSC 3.0, 5G Broadcast, or a combination of both. The company plans to test the Castanet platform on Sinclair’s WIAV-CD Washington, D.C. station. This initiative comes as multiple advancements in broadcast and mobile service integration are converging on commercially viable chipsets. Aitken noted that while many in broadcast TV initially viewed 5G Broadcast as a way to bypass ATSC 3.0, he now sees the potential for a combined strategy, particularly after observing Castanet's approach with live LPTV prototype services supporting 5G Broadcast on ATSC 3.0 transmitters in Las Vegas and Silicon Valley. The goal is to leverage these technologies to maintain and expand the reach of over-the-air broadcasting in the evolving 5G landscape.
