What's Happening?
Compass Group UK & Ireland is set to open a new Cuisine Centre at SmartParc SEGRO Derby in late 2026. This facility will expand the company's food production capacity and create new jobs in Derbyshire. The 10,000 square meter facility is part of a £300
million regenerated brownfield development focused on food manufacturing and distribution. Once operational, the centre is expected to produce over 70 million meals annually for schools, hospitals, and workplaces across the UK. The site will produce five specialist food ranges, covering more than 200 dishes developed by chefs and dietitians. The production will occur in a controlled environment to ensure allergen management, food safety, and consistent quality. Charles Brown, Interim CEO of Compass Group UK & Ireland, emphasized the investment's importance in supporting local skills development and providing high-quality, nutritious meals.
Why It's Important?
The opening of the new Cuisine Centre is significant for both Compass Group and the local community. It represents a substantial investment in Derbyshire's economy, creating jobs and supporting skills development in the food production sector. The facility's focus on sustainability, with features like an on-site energy centre and solar power generation, aligns with broader industry trends towards environmentally responsible operations. This development also strengthens links with regional suppliers, offering further opportunities for local producers and contributing to the area's food economy. By expanding its production capabilities, Compass Group can better meet the demand for nutritious meals in various sectors, enhancing its service offerings and market position.
What's Next?
As the facility becomes operational, Compass Group plans to collaborate with regional partners to support training and employment in food production. The company aims to integrate sustainability into its operations, with the energy centre recycling waste heat and solar power supplying a portion of the facility's energy needs. The development is expected to become a key part of Compass Group's production network and contribute to Derby's growing food manufacturing sector. The company's wider Social Promise aims to positively impact one million people by 2030 through jobs, training, and community engagement, indicating ongoing investment in community and workforce development.
