What's Happening?
Kaoko Metals, an ASX-listed mining exploration company, has announced the discovery of a new outcrop of copper mineralisation at its Bootless prospect, part of the Chalkos copper/silver project in Namibia. This discovery was made during the company's
maiden fieldwork programme and is located within a 2-km corridor between the existing Otniel and Donkey Hill prospects. The Bootless prospect features copper mineralisation primarily in quartz-carbonate veins, with additional mineralisation in adjacent dolomitised rocks. The mineralisation is characterized by secondary copper oxide minerals such as chrysocolla, malachite, and azurite. This differs from the higher-grade copper occurrences at Donkey Hill and Otniel, which are associated with quartzite units. Recent mapping has extended the known surface extent of copper mineralisation at Otniel by 200 meters, while at Donkey Hill, visible copper mineralisation has been identified extending 60 meters beyond the Donkey Hill East prospect. Further mapping and sampling are planned, with laboratory assay results expected in six to eight weeks.
Why It's Important?
The discovery of new copper mineralisation at the Bootless prospect significantly enhances the exploration potential of Kaoko Metals' Chalkos project. This development could lead to increased resource estimates and potentially attract further investment into the project. Copper is a critical metal for various industries, including electronics and renewable energy, and the expansion of copper resources in Namibia could have positive economic implications for the region. The discovery also underscores the prospectivity of the area between the high-grade Donkey Hill and Otniel prospects, which could lead to more extensive exploration and development activities. As the demand for copper continues to rise globally, such discoveries are crucial for meeting future supply needs.
What's Next?
Kaoko Metals plans to continue its exploration activities at the Chalkos project, with further mapping and sampling to test the new interpretations of the mineralisation. The company is also preparing for earthworks and drilling, which will be informed by the upcoming laboratory assay results. These results will help refine and prioritize targets for the company's maiden drilling programme. The success of these activities could lead to a more comprehensive understanding of the project's resource potential and guide future development strategies. Stakeholders, including investors and local communities, will be closely monitoring the outcomes of these exploration efforts.
