What's Happening?
Chase Stillman, a 23-year-old forward and former first-round pick of the New Jersey Devils in 2021, has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Detroit Red Wings. The deal, announced on Saturday, is valued at $850,000 at the NHL level, contingent
upon Stillman making the Red Wings' roster. Previously, Stillman was not tendered a qualifying offer by the Vancouver Canucks, making him a free agent. Despite being a first-round pick, Stillman has yet to play in the NHL, having spent his career in the AHL with affiliates of the Devils, Canucks, and Pittsburgh Penguins. Over 105 AHL games, he has accumulated 18 goals and 40 points. Stillman is the son of Cory Stillman, a two-time Stanley Cup champion who played over 1,000 NHL games.
Why It's Important?
This signing is significant for both Chase Stillman and the Detroit Red Wings. For Stillman, it represents a crucial opportunity to break into the NHL, a goal he has yet to achieve despite his high draft status. For the Red Wings, acquiring a young player with potential upside could bolster their roster depth, especially if Stillman can translate his AHL performance to the NHL level. The move also reflects the Red Wings' strategy of investing in young talent to rebuild and strengthen their team for future competitiveness. If successful, Stillman's addition could provide the Red Wings with a cost-effective player who can contribute to their long-term goals.
What's Next?
Chase Stillman will aim to secure a spot on the Red Wings' NHL roster during training camp and preseason games. His performance in these settings will be critical in determining whether he can make the leap from the AHL to the NHL. The Red Wings' coaching staff will evaluate his skills, adaptability, and potential fit within the team's existing lineup. Should Stillman succeed, he could become a regular contributor for the Red Wings in the upcoming season. Conversely, if he does not make the NHL roster, he will likely continue to develop his game in the AHL, awaiting another opportunity.
