What's Happening?
Investigate Midwest is bringing its live storytelling series back to Iowa City on Thursday, November 12, with an event titled 'Farm to Table: A Live Storytelling Event.' Four local storytellers from Iowa, with diverse backgrounds in farming, journalism,
education, and the arts, will share personal narratives centered on food, agriculture, and community. The event aims to explore the role food plays in people's lives, from farming practices and family traditions to the connections fostered around shared meals. Co-produced with the University of Iowa's Event Management Certificate program, the event will be held at Trumpet Blossom Cafe in Iowa City. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the storytelling program commencing at 6:30 p.m. Charity Nebbe, an award-winning journalist and talk show host at Iowa Public Radio, will emcee the evening, which will also feature live music, food and drinks, trivia, and a silent auction.
Why It's Important?
This event is significant as it provides a platform for local voices to share authentic stories about critical aspects of Iowan life: food, farming, and community. In a state deeply rooted in agriculture, these narratives can offer valuable insights into the challenges, triumphs, and cultural significance of the food system. By bringing together individuals from various backgrounds, the event fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for the interconnectedness of these elements. Furthermore, the event serves as a fundraiser for Investigate Midwest, an independent, nonprofit newsroom dedicated to investigative reporting on agriculture, food systems, and rural communities. The proceeds will support their mission to serve as a watchdog over influential agricultural corporations and institutions, highlighting the importance of independent journalism in shedding light on complex issues affecting the region and beyond.

Beyond the Headlines
The 'Farm to Table' event taps into a growing societal interest in the origins of food and the human stories behind its production. In an era dominated by industrial agriculture, personal narratives about farming and food can help bridge the gap between consumers and producers, fostering a greater appreciation for the labor and traditions involved. This event also highlights the power of storytelling as a tool for community building and education, offering a more accessible and engaging way to discuss complex issues related to agriculture and food systems.
