Century Aluminum's Mt. Holly smelter in Goose Creek, South Carolina, has restarted operations after a year-long effort and a $50 million investment. The plant, which had been operating at reduced capacity since 2015 due to a dispute over electricity costs,
now runs one potline that increases U.S. primary aluminum production by approximately 10%. The smelter requires a continuous power supply of 397 megawatts to maintain its operations, equivalent to the output of a mid-sized power station. This high energy demand is critical because any interruption in power supply could solidify the molten aluminum, rendering the equipment unusable.
