What's Happening?
As the Golden Quarter approaches, a period critical for retail sales, many retailers are facing operational challenges despite widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). According to research by UiPath, a leader in business orchestration and
automation, 97% of UK retailers have implemented AI in some form. However, nearly half of these retailers are yet to see a measurable commercial impact. The study, which surveyed 500 UK retail leaders, highlights that a significant number of retailers still rely on manual processes for decision-making, with 79% indicating that most key operational decisions require manual intervention. This reliance on manual processes is contributing to delayed decision-making and poor data visibility, which are cited as major barriers to agility during peak trading periods. Additionally, issues such as inventory inaccuracies and legacy technology are affecting operational success and margins.
Why It's Important?
The findings underscore a critical gap between AI implementation and its effective utilization in retail operations. As retailers prepare for the Golden Quarter, the inability to leverage AI effectively could result in missed opportunities and revenue losses. The research suggests that many retailers are operating with hindsight, reacting to issues only after they have impacted commercial performance. This situation poses a risk to margin protection, identified as a significant commercial risk by over a quarter of retail leaders. The disconnect between data and decision-making processes highlights the need for improved operational visibility and connected processes to preemptively address potential disruptions. The effective use of AI could transform decision-making, allowing retailers to stay ahead of disruptions rather than merely reacting to them.
What's Next?
Retailers are likely to focus on enhancing their AI capabilities to improve operational visibility and decision-making processes. As the Golden Quarter nears, there may be increased efforts to integrate AI more effectively into retail operations to address challenges such as stock management, fulfillment, and returns. Retail leaders may also prioritize addressing issues related to data visibility and legacy technology to enhance agility and protect margins. The emphasis will likely be on using AI to connect critical data, systems, and teams to prevent operational bottlenecks and underperformance during peak trading periods.
