What's Happening?
Netflix has expanded its food programming by adding two popular YouTube series, 'Mythical Kitchen' and 'Last Meals,' to its platform. These shows, produced by Mythical Entertainment, are spin-offs from the flagship YouTube show 'Good Mythical Morning'
(GMM), hosted by Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal. 'Mythical Kitchen' and 'Last Meals' are hosted by chef Josh Scherer, who joined Mythical in 2017 as a culinary producer before becoming a host in 2019. 'Last Meals' features celebrity guests discussing their careers while eating their theoretical perfect last meals, with episodes often garnering millions of views on YouTube. 'Mythical Kitchen' offers a more varied approach, including cooking challenges, taste tests, and themed episodes like recreating famous Disney World dishes. Unlike previous Netflix deals with YouTube creators, new episodes of 'Mythical Kitchen' and 'Last Meals' will debut on Netflix simultaneously with their YouTube release. The Netflix offerings currently include around 50 popular archived episodes for each show, along with new content. Notable guests on 'Last Meals' include Gillian Anderson, Alton Brown, Tom Hanks, and Tony Hawk, with an episode featuring Gordon Ramsay being a favorite of Scherer's.
Why It's Important?
This partnership between Netflix and Mythical Entertainment signifies a growing trend of major streaming platforms integrating successful digital-native content. For Netflix, it means diversifying its content library beyond traditional television and film productions, tapping into the established and highly engaged audience of YouTube creators. This move allows Netflix to attract a younger demographic that is accustomed to consuming content on YouTube, potentially increasing its subscriber base and viewership. For Mythical Entertainment, it provides a significant opportunity to expand its reach and monetize its content on a global streaming platform, elevating the profiles of its shows and hosts like Josh Scherer. The simultaneous release of new episodes on both platforms is a strategic decision that acknowledges the importance of YouTube as a primary distribution channel while leveraging Netflix's broader audience. This collaboration also highlights the increasing professionalization and mainstream acceptance of online content creators, blurring the lines between traditional and digital media.
What's Next?
The success of 'Mythical Kitchen' and 'Last Meals' on Netflix could pave the way for similar partnerships between the streaming giant and other popular YouTube creators. Netflix will likely monitor viewership numbers and engagement to assess the effectiveness of this strategy. If these shows perform well, it could lead to further investment in digital-native content and potentially more original productions with YouTube personalities. Mythical Entertainment will continue to produce new episodes for both platforms, aiming to maintain its YouTube audience while growing its Netflix viewership. The simultaneous release model will be crucial in managing audience expectations across both platforms. This collaboration might also influence how other streaming services approach content acquisition, potentially leading to a broader trend of integrating successful online content into mainstream streaming libraries. The ongoing evolution of content consumption habits suggests that such hybrid distribution models may become more common in the future.
Beyond the Headlines
This collaboration reflects a significant cultural shift in how entertainment is produced and consumed. The rise of YouTube creators like Mythical Entertainment demonstrates a democratization of content creation, where individuals and smaller studios can build massive audiences without traditional media gatekeepers. Netflix's decision to onboard these shows validates the quality and appeal of digital-native content, signaling that the distinction between 'online' and 'mainstream' entertainment is rapidly diminishing. The focus on food-related content also taps into a broader societal interest in culinary arts, cooking challenges, and celebrity culture, which has proven to be a highly engaging genre across various platforms. Furthermore, the concept of 'last meals' in particular delves into deeper psychological and cultural aspects of food, memory, and personal identity, offering a unique blend of entertainment and introspection. This trend suggests a future where content creators can leverage multiple platforms to reach diverse audiences, fostering a more interconnected and dynamic media ecosystem.
