What's Happening?
The National Football League (NFL) has included Montez Sweat and Jeffery Simmons, both alumni of Mississippi State, in its Top 100 Players list for 2026. Montez Sweat, currently playing for the Chicago Bears, is ranked at #91, while Jeffery Simmons, a defensive
tackle for the Tennessee Titans, is positioned at #83. Both players were part of the 2018 Mississippi State defense and were first-round selections in the 2019 NFL Draft. Sweat, who had a notable season with 53 tackles, 13 tackles for losses, and ten quarterback sacks, has re-entered the Top 100 after a brief absence. Simmons, on the other hand, had an impressive season with 67 tackles, 17 for losses, and 11 sacks, earning him his first All-Pro First-Team recognition. His performance also led to a lucrative contract extension, making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in the league.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of Montez Sweat and Jeffery Simmons in the NFL's Top 100 Players list highlights their significant contributions to their respective teams and the league. For Mississippi State, this recognition underscores the strength of its football program in developing top-tier NFL talent. The contract extension for Simmons, valued at $105.8 million, not only sets a new financial benchmark for defensive tackles but also reflects the increasing value placed on defensive prowess in the NFL. This development could influence contract negotiations for other defensive players and impact team salary cap strategies. Additionally, the recognition of these players may inspire current and future athletes at Mississippi State and other colleges, emphasizing the potential for collegiate success to translate into professional acclaim.
What's Next?
As the NFL continues to release its Top 100 Players list, there is anticipation for other Mississippi State alumni, such as Dak Prescott, to be included. Prescott, who was ranked #79 last year, is expected to be listed among the top 80 players. The ongoing recognition of Mississippi State players could enhance the university's reputation as a breeding ground for NFL talent, potentially influencing recruitment and funding for its football program. For Sweat and Simmons, maintaining or improving their rankings in future lists will depend on their performance in the upcoming NFL season, where they will aim to build on their current success.
