What's Happening?
Joby Aviation has reached an agreement to acquire Resonant Sciences for $500 million in cash and stock. This acquisition marks Joby's latest move to deepen its involvement in the defense sector. Resonant Sciences, based in Ohio, specializes in radio frequency
and sensor systems and will become a dedicated defense business under Joby. The acquisition will allow Joby to focus on certifying, manufacturing, and launching its electric air taxi while Resonant Sciences will absorb Joby's defense projects, including the development of turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft. This strategic move is part of Joby's broader effort to find near-term revenue sources as it continues to develop its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of Resonant Sciences is significant for Joby Aviation as it provides a stable revenue stream through defense contracts, which can help mitigate the financial challenges associated with developing eVTOL technology. The defense sector offers lucrative opportunities that can support Joby's long-term growth and financial stability. By integrating Resonant's technologies with its own, Joby can enhance its capabilities in developing advanced defense systems, positioning itself as a key player in the defense market. This move also reflects a broader trend in the electric aviation industry, where companies are seeking to diversify their revenue streams beyond urban air taxis due to rising costs and regulatory hurdles.
What's Next?
Following the acquisition, Resonant Sciences will operate as Joby's dedicated defense division, continuing its existing work while integrating Joby's defense projects. This strategic alignment is expected to create new opportunities in adjacent markets, particularly in the integration of Joby's dual-use autonomy stack with Resonant's RF sensing capabilities. The acquisition is expected to close in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. Joby will finance the deal with $450 million in cash and $50 million in equity. This acquisition is likely to attract top-tier aerospace talent and industry partners to the Dayton region, establishing a major hub for advanced aviation and defense technology.
