What's Happening?
The Qatari Businesswomen Association (QBWA) has strengthened its international engagement by participating in the 9th UNCTAD World Investment Forum 2026. During the forum, QBWA co-organized a session titled 'Women Who Invest: Mobilising Female Capital
for the Future' with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). This session brought together women investors, entrepreneurs, and business leaders to discuss increasing women's active role in directing capital and influencing investment decisions. Key topics included enhancing financial and investment knowledge, expanding access to opportunities, directing capital towards innovation and sustainable growth, and developing international investment networks. The discussions also highlighted the crucial role of financial institutions, policymakers, private-sector organizations, and investment networks in fostering an environment conducive to women's economic participation. A significant outcome of this collaboration is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between QBWA and UNCTAD, establishing a framework for ongoing cooperation and joint initiatives aimed at supporting women's economic empowerment.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is important as it directly addresses the underrepresentation of women in investment and economic decision-making globally. By focusing on mobilizing female capital and strengthening international investment partnerships, the initiative aims to unlock significant economic potential. Increased participation of women in investment can lead to more diverse and inclusive economic growth, fostering innovation and sustainable development. For the U.S., such global initiatives can influence best practices and policy discussions around gender equality in business and finance, potentially inspiring similar programs or collaborations. The emphasis on capacity building and international business development also creates opportunities for cross-border economic ties and knowledge exchange, which can benefit U.S. businesses and investors seeking to engage with global markets, particularly in regions where women's economic roles are rapidly expanding. The collaboration underscores a growing global recognition of women as critical economic actors.
What's Next?
Following the World Investment Forum 2026, QBWA and UNCTAD plan to continue their collaboration, focusing on women's entrepreneurship, investment, capacity building, and international business development. The Memorandum of Understanding provides a structured pathway for these ongoing efforts. QBWA also intends to further develop its international relationships and explore initiatives that improve women's access to investment knowledge, funding, and business opportunities. This includes supporting the UNCTAD Women in Business Awards and offering complimentary memberships to award winners, facilitating connections with relevant business leaders and potential partners. These steps indicate a sustained commitment to fostering women's economic participation on a global scale, with future initiatives likely to build upon the foundations laid during the forum and through the signed agreement.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between QBWA and UNCTAD extends beyond immediate economic benefits, touching upon deeper societal and cultural implications. By empowering women in investment and entrepreneurship, these initiatives challenge traditional gender roles and contribute to a more equitable distribution of economic power. This shift can lead to broader social changes, including increased financial literacy among women, greater autonomy, and a more inclusive business culture. The focus on international networks also highlights the growing interconnectedness of global economies and the importance of diverse perspectives in addressing complex economic challenges. Ethically, the partnership promotes principles of fairness and equal opportunity, advocating for a world where gender is not a barrier to economic success. This long-term vision aims to create a more balanced and resilient global economy by leveraging the full potential of all its participants.
