A new report on New York City jobs data, compiled by the nonprofit Center for an Urban Future, indicates a substantial decline in entry-level job postings, particularly in 'computer and mathematical' occupations. Since 2022, these postings have plummeted
by 49 percent. This trend suggests that technology firms are leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to justify a significant slowdown in new hires. While computer science graduates are currently most affected, the report warns that this could be a precursor for other sectors. Jon Bowles, executive director of Urban Future, noted that overall entry-level postings have 'fallen off a cliff,' making positions for young people with limited experience increasingly difficult to secure due to intense competition. Other industries experiencing drastically lower entry-level hiring include office and administrative support, financial operations, arts, design, entertainment, sports, media, and education and libraries.
