What's Happening?
Soha Budhani has founded Project 28, an initiative aimed at improving health literacy for women by delivering information in heritage languages and regional dialects. The project trains volunteer Health Advocates to provide adapted health literacy, focusing
on cultural and dialect adaptation rather than merely translating English materials. This approach addresses the language barriers that often prevent effective communication of health information in communities where traditional dialects are spoken. Project 28 has reached over 420 women across more than 17 regional dialects, emphasizing the importance of culturally sensitive health education.
Why It's Important?
Project 28 addresses a critical gap in global health literacy by focusing on the delivery of information rather than the information itself. By empowering local volunteers to communicate in familiar dialects, the initiative removes barriers to understanding and reduces stigma associated with discussing reproductive health. This model could serve as a blueprint for similar efforts worldwide, highlighting the importance of cultural sensitivity in public health initiatives. The project's success demonstrates the potential for grassroots movements to effect significant change in health education and literacy.
