What's Happening?
Broadcom has entered into a 10-year agreement with NTT DOCOMO, a Japanese telecommunications operator, to upgrade and strengthen its private cloud infrastructure. This partnership will leverage VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and includes software licensing,
technical assistance, and maintenance support for VMware products. This marks Broadcom's first 10-year comprehensive VMware software agreement in Japan. The collaboration, which began in 2019 with the development and operation of DOCOMO’s private cloud using VMware technology, aims to improve infrastructure reliability, security, and operational efficiency. The agreement focuses on three key priorities: service availability, cybersecurity, and faster service delivery. DOCOMO plans to use VCF to enhance system maintenance, minimize service interruptions, and manage servers, storage, and networking for flexible capacity expansion. Additionally, DOCOMO will utilize VMware vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS) to run virtual machines and containers on a unified platform, streamlining application development and deployment.
Why It's Important?
This long-term agreement is significant for both Broadcom and NTT DOCOMO, demonstrating a continued commitment to advanced cloud infrastructure in the telecommunications sector. For Broadcom, securing a decade-long comprehensive software agreement with a major international telecommunications provider like NTT DOCOMO reinforces its position in the enterprise cloud market, particularly after its acquisition of VMware. It showcases the value and stability of VMware Cloud Foundation in critical infrastructure deployments. For NTT DOCOMO, the partnership is crucial for adapting to evolving technological demands, including the growing adoption of AI and increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. By enhancing its private cloud infrastructure with VCF, DOCOMO aims to ensure reliable digital services, improve cybersecurity measures through strengthened patch management and AI-driven operations, and accelerate service delivery through automation. This move is expected to provide DOCOMO with a robust and secure foundation for future innovations, including advancements in 6G and the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) initiative.
What's Next?
Moving forward, Broadcom and NTT DOCOMO plan to evolve the private cloud into a platform that supports virtual machines, containers, and AI workloads with increased automation and AI-driven operations. The collaboration will also consider emerging technologies and infrastructure developments, such as 6G and the IOWN initiative. Broadcom will provide VCF Forte Support, its highest level of service, to ensure continuous infrastructure operations for DOCOMO. Engineering teams from both companies will work together to support secure and reliable service delivery. The focus on continuous system visibility, anomaly detection, and collaboration with dedicated support teams is expected to help DOCOMO proactively identify and respond to potential issues and emerging threats. This long-term strategic partnership indicates a sustained effort to innovate and secure critical telecommunications infrastructure against future challenges.
