What's Happening?
Gauge Capital, a middle-market private equity firm, has acquired Saltyface, a premium clean sunless tanning brand. This acquisition marks Gauge Capital's third sunless tanning deal in just over three years and its first beauty transaction since Andrew
Stanleick joined the firm in July as managing director and operating partner to lead consumer sector investments. Saltyface, founded in 2020 by Bethany and David Menzel, offers skincare-forward formulations and is sold through its direct-to-consumer business, Amazon, and select retailers like Credo Beauty and Erewhon. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Saltyface will join Coco & Eve and Loving Tan within Gauge Capital's Soleil Collective, a group of high-growth brands specializing in sunless tan, sun care, and body care. Gauge Capital targets businesses with enterprise values ranging from $50 million to $500 million and at least $5 million in EBITDA.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition highlights the growing trend of 'skinification' within the sunless tanning category, where consumers are increasingly seeking products that offer skincare benefits alongside tanning. The global self-tanning market is projected to reach $2.4 billion by 2034, growing at an annual rate of approximately 8%, outpacing the overall beauty market's forecast of 5% annual growth. This indicates a significant shift in consumer preferences towards safer tanning alternatives and a demand for high-quality, natural-looking results. Gauge Capital's strategic move to expand its sunless tanning portfolio positions it to capitalize on this market growth. The firm's investment will support Saltyface's omnichannel distribution expansion and product innovation, potentially increasing its market share and reach within the U.S. beauty industry. The involvement of industry veteran Andrew Stanleick also signals a focused effort to drive growth in the consumer sector, particularly in beauty.
What's Next?
Gauge Capital's investment is expected to facilitate the expansion of Saltyface's omnichannel distribution and drive product innovation. This will likely involve increasing its presence in more retailers and developing new formulations to meet evolving consumer demands. The brand's co-founder, David Menzel, stated that Gauge Capital brings the experience and resources necessary to reach a wider audience and develop new products while maintaining the brand's core identity. Industry experts, such as Lesley Holmes, brand advisor and founder of Beneath The Gloss, anticipate that Saltyface will further appeal to prestige skincare consumers seeking a subtler approach to self-tanning. This could lead to increased market penetration and a shift in consumer habits, encouraging more regular use of self-tanning products as part of a daily skincare routine rather than just for special occasions. The continued growth of the sunless tanning market suggests further consolidation and investment in this sector.
Beyond the Headlines
The acquisition of Saltyface by Gauge Capital reflects a broader cultural shift in beauty standards and health consciousness. As awareness of skin cancer risks associated with sun exposure increases, consumers are actively seeking safer alternatives to achieve a sun-kissed look. This trend is driving innovation in the self-tanning industry, with a focus on clean ingredients, skincare benefits, and natural-looking results. The 'skinification' of self-tanning products, where formulations prioritize skin health and quality, represents a significant evolution from traditional self-tanners. This development also underscores the power of social media influencing in brand building, as Saltyface was founded by individuals with backgrounds in social media. The success of brands like Saltyface highlights the importance of authentic branding and direct-to-consumer engagement in today's competitive beauty market, influencing how new brands emerge and scale.
