What's Happening?
Musicus Society, an organization dedicated to fostering cross-cultural classical music collaborations, has announced the launch of 'Histoires croisées: France – Hong Kong.' This multidisciplinary project includes a new album and accompanying performances
that delve into the historical and cultural connections between France and Hong Kong from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. The album, set to be released on December 4, 2026, under the British label Signum Records, features cellist Trey Lee, Musicus Soloists Hong Kong, and members of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. It presents a dialogue between French and Chinese repertoires, notably incorporating Chinese instruments into Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite and Western string arrangements of Cantonese tunes. The project, curated by Trey Lee, integrates music with live storytelling, historical photo exhibitions, and dance to bring this lesser-known historical chapter to life. The album's central selections include a newly arranged version of Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite for Western-Chinese Ensemble, with a track from this world premiere recording available for public streaming.
Why It's Important?
This project is significant for its contribution to cross-cultural understanding and artistic innovation. By blending Western and Chinese classical music traditions, 'Histoires croisées' offers a unique perspective on the historical interactions between France and Hong Kong, moving beyond the commonly acknowledged British colonial narrative. The inclusion of traditional Chinese instruments in Western classical pieces, such as Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, demonstrates a creative approach to musical fusion, potentially inspiring new forms of collaboration and repertoire development in the global classical music scene. For audiences, it provides an immersive experience that combines music with historical narratives, dance, and visual elements, enriching their appreciation of both cultural heritage and contemporary artistic expression. The involvement of acclaimed artists and institutions, alongside the international release and performance schedule, underscores the project's potential to reach a broad audience and promote cultural exchange on a global scale.
What's Next?
The 'Histoires croisées: France – Hong Kong' project will continue with a series of launch concerts and an exhibition. The Hong Kong album launch concert is scheduled for December 12, 2026, at the historic Béthanie Theatre in Pokfulam, which will also feature a live dance performance in partnership with the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Following this, a Paris album launch concert will take place on December 18, 2026, at the Salle Gaveau, with narration by French host and musicologist Pauline Lambert. These performances aim to bring the Franco-Hong Kong musical narrative full circle, bridging the two cities. Additionally, a concurrent fringe exhibition curated by academic François Drémeaux will feature archival materials, photographs, and historical narratives, offering further insights into the profound cross-cultural presence of the French in Hong Kong. The album itself will be available for digital streaming and download, and as a physical CD, starting December 4, 2026.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Histoires croisées' project delves into deeper implications beyond its immediate musical and historical scope. It highlights the often-overlooked nuances of colonial history and cultural exchange, demonstrating how diverse influences shape a region's identity. The project's focus on specific historical narratives—botanical discovery, charity and devotion, and medical science—through music provides a unique lens to explore the human stories behind historical events. This approach can foster a more empathetic understanding of complex historical relationships and their lasting impact on contemporary society. Ethically, the project champions the idea of cultural dialogue and mutual respect, using art as a medium to bridge divides and celebrate shared heritage. It also underscores the role of individual curiosity, as exemplified by Trey Lee's personal journey of discovery, in uncovering and preserving cultural narratives that might otherwise be forgotten. This initiative serves as a model for how artistic endeavors can contribute to historical education and cross-cultural appreciation.
