Universal Film and Focus Features have extended their exclusive partnership with the Sundance Institute for another two years. This collaboration aims to support emerging filmmakers through the Sundance Institute Breakthrough | Focus Features Fellowship.
The fellowship provides financial grants, mentorship, and career guidance to a select group of filmmaker fellows each year. Universal's Filmmaker & Content Strategies group will oversee the overall sponsorship, while Focus Features will provide direct support and mentorship. The 2026 class of fellows includes Roberto Fatal, Joanna Rothkopf, Said Zagha, and Renee Zhan, all writer-directors chosen from the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab and Directors Lab. These fellows will receive financial assistance and mentorship from Focus Features, along with enrichment opportunities from Universal to expand their professional networks and gain insights into the studio ecosystem, covering development, production, marketing, and distribution. Additionally, fellows are eligible for consideration in the Universal Writers Residency program, which pairs writers with Universal's term deal producers to develop original film ideas.
