What's Happening?
AFI KLM E&M and AerCap have formalized a joint venture to provide spare engine support for aircraft powered by CFM International Leap engines. This partnership aims to address asset availability constraints as the global fleet of Leap-powered aircraft expands.
The joint venture will initially acquire 40 new Leap-1A and Leap-1B spare engines, with the first engines expected to enter the leasing pool by early 2027. This move is part of a strategic effort to support AFI KLM E&M's customer base, which includes nearly 3,000 aircraft operated by around 200 major airlines worldwide.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of this joint venture is crucial for the aviation industry, as it ensures reliable and flexible engine support solutions for operators of Leap-powered aircraft. With the expected growth of Leap engine variants at a compound annual growth rate of 12.9% through 2035, the demand for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services is anticipated to be strong. This partnership helps mitigate potential disruptions in engine availability, supporting the operational efficiency of airlines and contributing to the overall growth of the aviation sector.
What's Next?
The joint venture plans to expand its leasing pool with additional engine deliveries through 2032, subject to regulatory approvals. AFI KLM E&M is also prioritizing the acceleration of piece-part repairs on Leap engines, enhancing its maintenance capabilities. As the fleet of Leap-powered aircraft continues to grow, the joint venture will play a key role in ensuring that airlines have access to critical spare capacity, supporting their operational needs.
