A new online calculator has been developed to estimate a runner's First Lactate Threshold (LT1) pace and the upper limit for 'Zone 2' easy running. This tool utilizes a runner's current 5k fitness level to provide these estimates. LT1 is defined as the pace at which
running begins to significantly challenge the body's homeostasis, leading to elevated but stable blood lactate levels. Running below LT1, in Zone 2, is characterized by stable oxygen consumption and blood lactate levels statistically indistinguishable from baseline. The calculator incorporates data from a 2024 scientific paper by Hunter and colleagues, which provides LT1 values from lab testing and critical speed values from time trial performances. It uses meta-regression to analyze 23 studies involving 487 athletes, establishing a consistent relationship between critical speed and LT1. The tool also accounts for individual variations and the uncertainty in estimating critical speed from a single 5k performance, offering adjustable confidence levels for the estimated Zone 2 upper limit.
