The College of Western Idaho (CWI) hosted its first-ever CWI Night with Athletic Club Boise (AC Boise) on September 30, bringing together students, employees, alumni, and community members for a professional soccer match. AC Boise defeated Cancun FC 3-1

During the event, CWI Dean of Student Access, Luis Caloca, was honored as AC Boise’s Community Impact STAR for his extensive work in expanding access to education and supporting students in the Treasure Valley. The evening also included CWI Admissions engaging with prospective students and a special T-shirt giveaway at halftime. CWI Psychology student Casey Sombke was awarded a $1,000 SCORE Big Scholarship during the match.
Why It's Important?
This event highlights the growing collaboration between educational institutions and local sports organizations to support community development and student success. The funds raised through ticket sales directly contribute to student scholarships, making higher education more accessible for individuals in the Treasure Valley. By honoring individuals like Luis Caloca, the event also recognizes and promotes community leadership and service, inspiring others to contribute to local initiatives. Such partnerships not only provide financial aid but also foster a sense of community and belonging among students, faculty, and local residents. For CWI, these 'CWI Nights' serve as a valuable platform for outreach, connecting with prospective students and showcasing the college's impact on the region's workforce and social fabric.
What's Next?
CWI Night will return this fall with the Idaho Steelheads, and more information regarding tickets and event details will be announced. The College of Western Idaho is expected to continue its efforts in community engagement and fundraising for student scholarships through similar events. The recognition of individuals like Luis Caloca may encourage further community involvement and leadership within the college and the broader Treasure Valley. CWI will likely continue to leverage these partnerships to strengthen its ties with local businesses and organizations, further expanding opportunities for students and enhancing its role as a key educational institution in the region. The ongoing success of these initiatives will be crucial for sustaining scholarship funds and community support.
Beyond the Headlines
The CWI Night at AC Boise exemplifies a broader trend of educational institutions seeking innovative ways to engage with their communities and secure funding for student support. Beyond the immediate financial benefits, these events build social capital, strengthening the bonds between the college, its students, and the wider community. They also provide unique experiential learning opportunities and expose students to professional sports and community service. The recognition of individuals for their community impact underscores the value placed on civic engagement and leadership, fostering a culture of service. This model of community-centric fundraising and engagement can serve as a blueprint for other colleges looking to enhance their local presence and support their student body in meaningful ways, creating a virtuous cycle of community investment and educational advancement.
