What's Happening?
ENF Technology has started supplying hydrofluoric acid to SK hynix, marking a significant step in localizing this critical material for semiconductor manufacturing. The company has invested over 100 billion won since 2020 to develop production capabilities
at its Cheonan facility. This move comes after Japan's export control measures in 2019 highlighted the need for local production. The hydrofluoric acid is currently being evaluated in SK hynix's production processes, with expectations to increase supply volumes soon. This development is part of ENF Technology's broader strategy to improve the profitability of its buffered oxide etchant (BOE) by reducing reliance on imported materials.
Why It's Important?
The localization of hydrofluoric acid production by ENF Technology is crucial for South Korea's semiconductor industry, which has been heavily reliant on Japanese imports. This shift not only enhances supply chain security but also reduces costs associated with importing raw materials. As the semiconductor industry is a significant contributor to the South Korean economy, this development could strengthen the country's position in the global market. Additionally, it may encourage other companies to pursue similar localization efforts, further bolstering domestic production capabilities and economic resilience.
What's Next?
ENF Technology plans to expand its customer base beyond SK hynix by conducting qualification processes with other global semiconductor manufacturers. The company aims to begin commercial shipments in the latter half of the year. Successful commercialization could alter the competitive landscape of the domestic market, challenging the dominance of Japanese suppliers. This could lead to increased competition and innovation within the industry, potentially driving further advancements in semiconductor manufacturing technologies.
