What's Happening?
Students from the University of Wisconsin-Stout's business and digital technology programs have developed a new website for One Drop Refillery, a Hudson-based business focused on reducing single-use plastics. The project, part of a capstone course, involved
extensive research into Hudson's demographics, household income, and the purchasing habits of sustainability-minded shoppers. This research led to the creation of three buyer personas: a busy parent seeking safe products, a wellness shopper focused on ingredients, and a minimalist aiming for zero waste. The students built a personality-based product finder into the Wix-powered website, allowing visitors to find products tailored to their lifestyles. The site was also optimized for mobile devices, as over 70% of visits originate from phones. Since its launch, the website has received over 2,000 visits from more than 1,200 unique individuals, with over 80% of traffic coming from Wisconsin and Minnesota, indicating successful local reach.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration highlights the significant impact that academic institutions can have on local businesses and the broader economy. For One Drop Refillery, the new website provides a crucial digital storefront and marketing tool, enabling it to reach a wider customer base and promote sustainable living. The data-driven approach, including buyer personas and mobile optimization, ensures the business can effectively engage its target audience. For the UW-Stout students, this project offered invaluable real-world experience, applying their academic knowledge to solve practical business challenges. This initiative also underscores the growing importance of digital literacy and e-commerce capabilities for small businesses, particularly those in niche markets like sustainability. The success of the website, with its high return visitor rate, demonstrates the potential for well-designed digital platforms to drive customer engagement and business growth.
What's Next?
One Drop Refillery plans to leverage the new website and the insights gained from the student project to further refine its online presence and marketing strategies. Owner Jennifer Fravel sees opportunities for continued collaboration with UW-Stout students in areas such as social media, customer research, branding, and sustainability education. This ongoing partnership could lead to further enhancements of the website, new marketing campaigns, and expanded community outreach efforts. The success of this project may also encourage other small businesses to seek similar collaborations with universities, fostering a symbiotic relationship between academia and local entrepreneurship. The student team's lead, Kolton Dupey, has already launched his own business based on the experience, indicating the project's direct impact on student career paths and entrepreneurial endeavors.
Beyond the Headlines
This initiative extends beyond immediate business benefits, touching upon broader societal and educational implications. The focus on sustainability through One Drop Refillery aligns with increasing consumer demand for eco-friendly products and practices, contributing to a more environmentally conscious marketplace. The project also serves as a model for experiential learning, demonstrating how students can gain practical skills and contribute meaningfully to their communities before graduation. This type of collaboration can bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, preparing students for future careers while simultaneously supporting local economic development. Furthermore, the emphasis on understanding customer personas and optimizing for mobile use reflects the evolving landscape of digital commerce, where personalized experiences and accessibility are paramount for business success.
