What's Happening?
The Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway has introduced a new coloring and activity book titled 'Color Your Way Down Route 66' to commemorate the upcoming 100th anniversary of the historic highway. Developed in collaboration with Ace Sign Company, the book features
artwork by Macie Wright, a Millikin University student. It includes over 25 pages of coloring activities, puzzles, games, and educational content that highlight the attractions, communities, and history along Illinois Route 66. The initiative aims to engage children and families, encouraging them to explore the destinations along the route. The book also features Simon, the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway mascot, who guides users through the activities and promotes the use of the organization's mobile app. This app assists visitors in locating attractions, restaurants, museums, businesses, and historic landmarks across the state.
Why It's Important?
The launch of the activity book is significant as it seeks to inspire a new generation of travelers to explore and appreciate the historical and cultural significance of Route 66. By providing an interactive and educational experience, the book aims to enhance family road trips and promote tourism along the route. This initiative not only supports local businesses and attractions by encouraging visits but also contributes to preserving the legacy of Route 66. As the centennial celebration approaches, such efforts are crucial in maintaining public interest and engagement with this iconic American highway, which has been a symbol of freedom and adventure for decades.
What's Next?
As the centennial of Route 66 approaches, further events and celebrations are planned, including the Illinois Route 66 Centennial Conference and Celebration scheduled for November 11 at Motorheads in Springfield. This event is expected to gather tourism leaders, business owners, volunteers, and Route 66 enthusiasts. The activity book and app are designed to work together to create a more interactive travel experience, potentially leading to increased tourism and economic benefits for the communities along the route. The continued promotion and celebration of Route 66 are likely to foster a renewed interest in its historical and cultural significance.
