What's Happening?
Destiny 2 players are finding ways to access previously vaulted content from the game, thanks to a new tool being developed by a community member. This tool, called Destiny 2 Shadowkeep Singleplayer Exploration Mode, allows players to explore areas that
were removed from the game in 2020 when Bungie introduced the content vault to manage the game's development. Although the tool does not make the old content playable in terms of missions or raids, it enables exploration of these areas for preservation purposes. The tool is expected to be released in the coming weeks and will be free and open source.
Why It's Important?
This development highlights the ongoing interest and dedication of the Destiny 2 community in preserving the game's history. By making these areas explorable again, players can appreciate the game's environmental art and design, which might otherwise be lost. This initiative also underscores the importance of game preservation, especially as live service games evolve and content is removed. It raises questions about ownership and access to digital content, particularly for players who have paid for expansions that are no longer available. The tool could serve as a model for other gaming communities interested in preserving digital content.
