A significant solar and battery storage project is underway in Texas, converting a coal mining site into a clean energy hub. The $1.7 billion initiative, led by Panamint Capital, involves the construction of a 1.2-gigawatt solar farm at the Big Rooter
site in Bremond, Texas. This project will utilize land from the Twin Oaks coal-fired power plant and Calvert surface coal mine, which will continue operations. The solar farm will include 1.6 gigawatt-hours of battery storage and 20 miles of new transmission lines. The first phase, a 491-MW section, is expected to be operational by August 2028, with the remaining 658 MW slated for August 2029. This development is part of Texas's growing solar sector, which is projected to generate more electricity than coal this year.
