What's Happening?
Lionsgate has announced the promotion of Scott Herbst to President of the Lionsgate Television Group. Herbst, who previously served as Executive Vice President and Head of Development, will now oversee all creative operations for the Television Group,
including development, current programming, casting, music, and scripted digital series. He will continue to report to Kevin Beggs, Lionsgate Television Group Chair and Chief Creative Officer. This leadership restructuring also includes new long-term deals for Lee Hollin, Head of Current Programming, and Marcello Bellisario, Head of Television Casting, both of whom will now report to Herbst. Russell Ziecker, Head of Television Music, will also report to Herbst. This move follows the departure of Sandra Stern, Vice Chairman of the Lionsgate TV Group, in March 2026, who remains with the studio as a long-term consultant. Herbst joined Lionsgate in 2018 and has been instrumental in the success of several key series, including 'The Studio' for Apple TV and 'The Hunting Wives' for Netflix.
Why It's Important?
This leadership change at Lionsgate Television Group signifies a strategic move to consolidate creative control under a single, proven executive. Scott Herbst's expanded role is expected to streamline decision-making and foster a more cohesive creative vision across the studio's diverse television slate. His track record of developing successful and critically acclaimed shows suggests that Lionsgate aims to further strengthen its position in the competitive television landscape. The retention of key executives like Hollin and Bellisario under new long-term contracts indicates a commitment to continuity and stability within the restructured group. This could lead to more efficient production pipelines and a more unified approach to content creation, potentially enhancing Lionsgate's ability to attract top talent and secure lucrative deals with major networks and streaming platforms. The emphasis on 'bold, noisy shows' that resonate with audiences highlights a clear strategic direction for future content development.
What's Next?
Following Scott Herbst's promotion, the Lionsgate Television Group is expected to continue its focus on developing and producing high-impact scripted series. With 12 out of 13 current scripted series recently renewed, the studio is poised for continued growth. The newly consolidated leadership structure under Herbst will likely lead to a more integrated approach to development, current programming, casting, and music, potentially resulting in more synergistic projects. Stakeholders, including writers, producers, and network executives, will be looking to see how this new leadership influences the types of projects Lionsgate greenlights and the creative direction of its existing franchises. The studio's ongoing relationships with platforms like Apple TV, Netflix, CBS, ABC, Showtime, and Starz will remain crucial, and the new leadership will be tasked with nurturing these partnerships while exploring new opportunities for content distribution and collaboration.
Beyond the Headlines
The restructuring of Lionsgate's Television Group leadership reflects broader trends in the entertainment industry, where studios are increasingly seeking to centralize creative authority to navigate a rapidly evolving content landscape. The emphasis on identifying 'distinctive material' and developing 'bold, noisy shows' underscores the industry's drive to capture audience attention in a crowded market. This move could also signal a shift towards more integrated content strategies, where development, production, and distribution are more closely aligned. The long-term implications could include a more consistent brand identity for Lionsgate's television output and potentially a more efficient allocation of resources. Furthermore, the continued reliance on established executives like Herbst, Hollin, and Bellisario highlights the value of institutional knowledge and strong industry relationships in maintaining a competitive edge in Hollywood.
