The rapid, AI-driven expansion of data centers globally is creating significant new construction, operational, climate, and insurance risks. Annual investment in data centers is projected to double from approximately $500 billion in 2024 to over $1 trillion
by 2027, according to a report by Allianz Commercial. The U.S. and China are expected to account for about 62% of new global data center capacity through 2030. A substantial portion of global data center capacity, around 79%, is located in areas prone to natural catastrophes, with 54% exposed to chronic heat and drought stress. In the Americas, 86% of data center capacity faces acute risks from flooding, wildfires, and strong winds. This surge in risk is driving demand for insurance, with the global data center insurance market projected to more than double from $11 billion to over $24 billion by 2030. Fire is identified as the primary cause of severe losses, accounting for over half of approximately €700 million ($800 million) in analyzed losses, followed by natural catastrophes and willful acts including cyber incidents.
