What's Happening?
HarperCollins has secured a new licensing agreement with The Walt Disney Company to publish National Geographic Kids books in the UK. This agreement, facilitated through Collins, a division of HarperCollins Publishers, aims to significantly expand their
offerings for young readers in the UK market. The new license also extends territory rights to the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, and the MENA region. This development follows a successful year for Collins, with National Geographic Kids Weird but True 2026 achieving its best-selling year ever. Plans for 2027 include a re-launch of the 'Little Kids First Big Books' series, new board books for toddlers, the anticipated 'Weird but True 2027', a 'Gross Fact Book', and the 'Bedtime Book of Sleepy Animals'. Michelle I’Anson, Children’s Reference Publisher, expressed enthusiasm for continuing the collaboration with Disney on the National Geographic Kids brand and growing its publishing presence in the UK.
Why It's Important?
This expansion signifies a strategic move by HarperCollins to capitalize on the growing market for children's educational and non-fiction books. By leveraging the established and popular National Geographic Kids brand, HarperCollins aims to strengthen its position in the UK and other key international markets. The focus on diverse formats, from board books to annuals and fact books, indicates an effort to capture a broad age range within the young reader demographic. This initiative could lead to increased market share for HarperCollins in children's publishing and further solidify the National Geographic Kids brand as a leader in educational content. The success of previous titles suggests a strong demand for this type of content, making this agreement a potentially lucrative venture for both HarperCollins and The Walt Disney Company.
What's Next?
HarperCollins plans an ambitious growth strategy for 2027, which includes a re-launch of the 'Little Kids First Big Books' series. New publishing efforts will introduce a range of board books for toddlers, the next installment of 'Weird but True 2027', a 'Gross Fact Book', and the 'Bedtime Book of Sleepy Animals'. These new titles are expected to be available to booksellers in the Autumn, providing a comprehensive selection of non-fiction books across various age groups. The company will focus on informing, amazing, and inspiring younger readers with both new and established favorites from the National Geographic Kids brand.
Beyond the Headlines
The continued success and expansion of educational brands like National Geographic Kids highlight a broader trend in publishing towards content that combines entertainment with learning. In an increasingly digital world, the demand for high-quality, engaging physical books for children remains strong, particularly in the non-fiction category. This agreement underscores the value of established brand recognition and strategic partnerships in the publishing industry. It also reflects a commitment to fostering curiosity and knowledge in young readers, providing them with reliable and engaging resources about the natural world and various fascinating facts. The global reach of this agreement also points to the universal appeal of such content.
