What's Happening?
DAZN has finalized an agreement with DirecTV to distribute its exclusive NBA team broadcasts, making games for the Cavaliers, Pacers, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, and Spurs available to DirecTV subscribers. This multiyear deal allows DirecTV streaming, satellite,
and U-verse customers to access DAZN's exclusive content at no additional cost. DirecTV users will be able to use their existing login credentials on the DAZN platform in the coming weeks. This expansion means that in-market streaming users with a 'Choice' plan or higher, and U-verse television customers with the U200 package or higher, will gain access. Additionally, DirecTV For Business service has acquired distribution rights for these broadcasts. This move significantly broadens the reach of these NBA teams' games, which were previously exclusive to DAZN's streaming service.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant for the U.S. sports broadcasting landscape, particularly for NBA fans and the regional sports network model. By integrating DAZN's exclusive content into DirecTV's offerings, it addresses a key challenge for sports streamers: reaching a wider audience beyond dedicated streaming subscribers. This could set a precedent for other exclusive streaming deals, potentially leading to more collaborations between streaming services and traditional television providers. For the five NBA teams involved, this deal means increased viewership and engagement, as their games become accessible to a larger segment of their local fan bases. It also highlights the evolving strategies of sports media companies like DAZN, which is exploring hybrid distribution models to maximize reach and revenue, rather than relying solely on direct-to-consumer streaming.
What's Next?
In the coming weeks, DirecTV subscribers will gain access to DAZN's exclusive NBA broadcasts using their existing login credentials. DAZN CEO/growth markets Pete Oliver indicated that the company is open to further agreements with vMVPDs, suggesting that more partnerships could be on the horizon. DAZN also aims to host the NBA’s centralized streaming solution, aggregating regional rights for various teams, which is expected to launch before the next season. The company has publicly expressed interest in national rights deals and plans to expand its hockey portfolio, currently holding an exclusive deal with the NHL Kings and other teams. DAZN is also positioning itself as a potential solution for Major League Baseball teams seeking streaming options outside the league's in-house local media department.
Beyond the Headlines
This deal reflects a broader trend in the U.S. media industry where the lines between traditional linear television and streaming services are blurring. As sports rights become increasingly fragmented, consumers often face challenges accessing all their desired content across multiple platforms. This partnership between DAZN and DirecTV could signal a move towards more integrated content delivery, potentially alleviating subscriber fatigue from managing numerous streaming subscriptions. It also raises questions about the long-term viability of purely exclusive streaming models for major sports leagues and teams. The collaboration suggests that a hybrid approach, combining the reach of traditional distributors with the flexibility of streaming, might be the future for maximizing audience engagement and revenue in the competitive sports media market.
