A new era in global air cargo, driven by the foundational infrastructure of Artificial Intelligence (AI), is replacing the growth logic previously supported by cross-border e-commerce over the past three years. High-value AI servers, GPU modules, HBM,
and data center racks, each costing hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars, are being prioritized for air transport from Asian semiconductor hubs directly to North American cloud giants' data centers. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), AI-related products, while only accounting for 7% of global air cargo volume in 2025, contribute a significant 53.5% of air cargo value. This 'small volume, high value, strong timeliness' characteristic makes air cargo a real-time indicator for the AI industry's prosperity. The Asia-North America route has become the core driver of this trend, with demand increasing by 14.7% in June, marking five consecutive months of double-digit growth, and representing approximately 23.5% of the global air cargo market.

The industry anticipates that this AI-driven air cargo boom is backed by multi-billion dollar data center capital expenditures over the next two to three years, rather than short-term inventory hoarding. However, Wong also suggests that a decline in AI cargo volumes from major Asian hubs, weakening demand for high-end slots, and fluctuating freight rates, coupled with a synchronized cooling of semiconductor orders and extended inventory holding times, could signal an early easing of the AI demand cycle, though multiple indicators would be needed to confirm such a shift.

The 'cost-no-object' approach to air freighting AI hardware reveals a deeper economic calculus at play. The immense value of AI server racks, which can cost hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars, makes the relatively small air freight cost (0.2%-0.5% of total hardware cost) negligible compared to the financial implications of delayed data center deployment or contract breaches. This highlights the strategic importance of rapid deployment in the AI race, where being first to market with advanced capabilities can yield significant competitive advantages. Furthermore, the rapid technological iteration of AI chips, with new generations emerging quarterly, necessitates swift delivery of the latest GPUs and HBM to client data centers.
