What's Happening?
Lotte Innovate and Lotte Engineering & Construction have jointly developed and launched an AI voice recognition home network service, integrating it into Lotte's existing Smart Home 2.0 platform. This new service allows residents to control various in-home
devices, such as lighting and heating/cooling systems, directly through a smartphone app using voice commands. This marks the first instance of a South Korean construction company embedding AI voice recognition directly into its smart home application, eliminating the need for separate AI speakers or dedicated devices. The technology leverages Lotte Innovate's proprietary large language model from its generative AI platform, Aimember. The rollout of this service will commence in phases, starting with new Lotte Castle and LE EL complexes.
Why It's Important?
This development signifies a notable advancement in smart home technology, particularly in the construction sector. By integrating AI voice control directly into a smartphone app, Lotte E&C aims to enhance user convenience and accessibility, especially for older adults or those less familiar with complex smartphone interfaces. The move addresses a common pain point of navigating multiple menus in traditional smart home systems, making device control more intuitive and hands-free. This innovation could set a new standard for smart home offerings in residential developments, potentially influencing other construction companies to adopt similar integrated AI solutions to improve user experience and differentiate their properties.
What's Next?
Lotte E&C plans to progressively expand the capabilities of its AI voice recognition service. Future enhancements will include controlling additional functions such as checking parking locations, booking community facilities within residential complexes, and managing energy consumption. The company aims to evolve this service into a comprehensive smart living platform that seamlessly connects everyday services with housing data. The phased implementation in new Lotte Castle and LE EL complexes will provide real-world feedback, allowing for further refinements and broader application of AI technology in construction and housing, including potential uses for communication support on construction sites.
Beyond the Headlines
The introduction of this integrated AI voice control system highlights a broader trend towards more intuitive and accessible smart home environments. By removing the dependency on external AI speakers, the technology simplifies the user experience and potentially reduces hardware clutter. This approach also underscores the growing importance of proprietary AI platforms, like Lotte's Aimember, in enabling customized and expandable smart solutions tailored to specific industry needs. The focus on accessibility for all age groups, including older adults, reflects a growing awareness of diverse user needs in technology design, pushing the smart home market towards more inclusive and user-friendly innovations.
