What's Happening?
The National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association (NTMA) has awarded ISSA Resort's event venue with the 2026 Judges Choice International Award. This recognition was given for the resort's terrazzo floor, which was executed by Aragon Grup, a terrazzo and resin
flooring contractor. The award was presented on May 13 at the NTMA's annual convention. The ISSA Resort, a five-star property located in Turda, Transylvania, features a ballroom capable of accommodating up to 800 guests. The design of the terrazzo floor, created by Twins Studio, a Bucharest firm led by Mihai Popescu, incorporates graded increments of gray, with brass divider strips marking the transitions between tones. This intricate pattern on the floor is designed to align with thousands of programmable LED glass tubes suspended overhead, creating a dynamic and shifting atmosphere within the venue. Aragon Grup, which joined the NTMA in 2020 as its first non-North American member, has now received its seventh distinction from the organization.
Why It's Important?
This award highlights the growing international recognition for craftsmanship and design in the flooring industry, particularly within the specialized field of terrazzo and mosaic work. For Aragon Grup, a Romanian firm, receiving such a prestigious international award from a U.S.-based association like the NTMA underscores its global competitiveness and expertise. This can potentially open doors for more international collaborations and projects, influencing design trends and material choices in large-scale commercial and hospitality developments worldwide, including those in the U.S. The recognition also elevates the profile of terrazzo as a sophisticated and versatile flooring option, potentially increasing its adoption in high-end architectural projects. For the NTMA, acknowledging international excellence reinforces its role as a leading authority in setting standards and recognizing quality within the terrazzo and mosaic industry on a global scale.
What's Next?
Following this international recognition, Aragon Grup may see an increase in demand for its specialized terrazzo and resin flooring services, potentially leading to expansion into new markets or larger projects. The ISSA Resort could leverage this award in its marketing efforts, enhancing its reputation as a premier venue with exceptional design and craftsmanship. The NTMA's continued recognition of international projects might encourage more global participation in its awards programs, fostering a broader exchange of techniques and innovations within the industry. This could also lead to increased interest in terrazzo and mosaic applications in architectural design, prompting manufacturers and designers to explore new materials and artistic expressions in flooring solutions. Future NTMA conventions may feature more international case studies and collaborations, further integrating global best practices into the U.S. market.
Beyond the Headlines
The award for the ISSA Resort's terrazzo floor signifies more than just an achievement in construction; it reflects a broader trend in architectural design that emphasizes integrated and experiential spaces. The deliberate alignment of the floor pattern with the overhead lighting system illustrates a holistic approach to interior design, where every element contributes to the overall ambiance and functionality of a space. This integration of art, architecture, and technology creates a dynamic environment that can adapt to various events, from solemn to celebratory. Ethically, the use of durable and aesthetically pleasing materials like terrazzo, which often incorporates recycled aggregates, aligns with principles of sustainable design and longevity in construction. This project also showcases the enduring appeal of traditional craftsmanship combined with modern design sensibilities, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in large-scale public spaces and setting new benchmarks for design excellence.
