What's Happening?
The artist duo TARWUK, consisting of Bruno Pogačnik Tremow and Ivana Vukšić, is showcasing their latest exhibition at White Cube Mason’s Yard in London. The exhibition, running until August 15, 2026, is inspired by the concept of gesamtkunstwerk, a term
coined by German composer Richard Wagner to describe a 'total work of art' that integrates multiple forms of creative expression. TARWUK's work is characterized by its exploration of collaboration, shared unconscious, and memory, drawing inspiration from avant-garde collectives of the 1960s and 1970s in the former Yugoslavia. The exhibition features a major site-specific installation, complemented by a new body of paintings and works on paper, creating an immersive environment that challenges traditional narratives and artistic boundaries.
Why It's Important?
This exhibition is significant as it highlights the evolving nature of contemporary art, where boundaries between different mediums and ideologies are increasingly blurred. TARWUK's approach to art-making, which emphasizes collaboration and the shared unconscious, offers a fresh perspective on the role of art in society. By drawing on historical avant-garde movements, the duo connects past artistic practices with contemporary issues, encouraging viewers to reflect on the nature of art and its impact on collective memory and identity. The exhibition's focus on gesamtkunstwerk also underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in creating immersive and holistic artistic experiences.
