What's Happening?
The city of Memphis is undertaking significant efforts to revitalize its downtown area to attract more hotel and convention business. This initiative comes in response to the challenges faced by the local hotel industry in recovering from the pandemic.
A key component of this revitalization is the $230 million renovation of the Renasant Convention Center, which reopened in 2021. The center now features a 118,000-square-foot column-free exhibit hall and 46 additional meeting rooms, making it a premier venue in the region. Despite its reopening during the pandemic, the convention center reported a $60 million economic impact for the 2022/23 fiscal year. However, the lack of suitable hotels nearby has been a barrier to further growth. To address this, the city has invested in upgrading existing hotels, such as the Peabody Memphis and the former Sheraton, now renamed the Memphis Riverline Hotel, which is undergoing renovations to be completed by 2029.
