Magna International, a Canadian auto parts giant, has increased its investment in Yuma Energy, a Bengaluru-based battery-swapping network for electric two- and three-wheelers in India. Magna is injecting an additional $35 million into Yuma, raising its stake
in the company from the initial 51% when the joint venture was formed. Yuma Energy, which spun out of Indian mobility startup Yulu in early 2023, has completed over 60 million battery swaps and currently has approximately 100,000 batteries deployed across its network. This investment is part of Magna's strategy to capitalize on India's growing gig economy, where electric vehicles (EVs) for delivery riders can benefit significantly from efficient battery swapping solutions. Yuma operates more than 400 stations with over 2,500 charging units and reported about ₹1 billion (approximately $10.5 million) in revenue for the financial year ending March 2026.

While Yulu currently accounts for the majority of Yuma's swaps, Yuma is actively diversifying its customer base, with non-Yulu customers expected to represent about 25% of its swaps within the next two years. Yuma will expand its network into new Indian cities like Chennai and Pune, while also adding more stations in existing operational areas. Although India remains the primary focus for the immediate future, Yuma's managing director, Muthu Subramanian, indicated plans to explore overseas expansion into Southeast Asian markets such as Vietnam and Thailand, and parts of Africa, as part of its longer-term roadmap, leveraging their large two-wheeler markets.
